6/18/10 - Amesbury Sports Park 7s
A tough start to the evening with Mystic River putting up 5 tries in the first half on the White Team. A little better second half with 3 tries let up.
Second match was very entertaining. Down 7-0, Kory Himmer (UNH) got us on the board with some nice support and Gabe Perrone (Tufts) hit his 1st of four straight conversions to tie it up at 7-7. South Shore answered right back and took a 14-7 lead, but an outstanding run by Brendan Sheehan (UML) and a nice offload to Kevin West (UML) in support hurdling over the ruck tied the game up at 14-14 as the halftime whistle blew. We took our first lead of the game in the 2nd as Perrone got involved and found a gap in the middle of the field. Up 21-14, South Shore came right back and tied it up 21-21. Next up was Jared Collinson (Springfeild) who used his speed to regain the lead 28-21. But not to be undone, South Shore again answered back and tied the game up at 28-28 with less than 30 seconds on the clock. On the ensuing kick-off, we launched an all out attack, and several phases later, Shaun Loughlin (Syracuse) dove over for the game winning try, 33-28.
On most days the South Shore game would’ve been the game of the tourney, but not yesterday. The Savages Navy (Chip) vs. Savages White (Smitty) match was as intense as they come. The Navy side went up early with a try by Collinson on a nice dummy and run up the middle, converted by Perrone. A mistake by Navy lead to the White Team answering right back. Rob Brennan (Stonehill) touched it down after a pop pass from deep in the try zone by a confused Andy Brank (UML) to cut the lead to 7-5. Collinson got his 3rd of the day to extend the lead for Navy 14-5, which held till half-time. White cut the lead to 14-10 when Collinson got his 4th and Perrone’s 3rd conversion seemed to put the game out of reach at 21-10. An overconfident and tired Navy side let down their guard and Brennan touched another one down to bring them within 6 at 21-15. That’s when Vini Daley (Springfield) in his yellow speedy shoes finally got the ball with some room and out-sprinted the Navy Team to cut the lead to 21-20. With less than 10 seconds left, the kick-off went weak-side and Tom Leclair (WNEC) caught the ball on the run from his own 30 meter line, thru a juke, thru a dummy pass, and side stepped another defender, and ran the 70 meters to the try line, but was tackled just inches short by Brank. Navy retained possession and a penalty was called. Just before Navy could tap and go, Coach Auscavitch ran out on the field and called for points. Perrone hit the drop kick from just left of the goal posts for the 3pts and the 24-22 win.
White would rebound to rattle off a 40-5 win against a young South Shore side while Navy came out strong against Mystic River, but their experience lead to 3 tries in the last 2 minutes of the first half and 2 tries spread out over the 7-minutes in the second half. Mystics win 33-19.
Mystic also got by South Shore 37-19 to win the tournament.
