Rugby challengePresenting a physical challenge like no other, the sport of rugby possesses elements of lacrosse, football, American football and wrestling. As a child who participated in these sports, I had learned aspects of each that I enjoyed. For instance, in baseball you need tremendous hand-eye coordination, with basketball, teamwork, with football, skill and strength and with wrestling, unparalleled determination and the will to succeed. Only rugby possesses all of these elements while maintaining an environment rich with sportsmanship and respect for your opponent, the official, your teammates and oneself. In the six years I have been involved with organized rugby, the facets of the game that keep me playing are the very ones that got me hooked many years ago. The training with your teammates, getting all your supplies and equipment organized the evening before, waking up on the morning of the match, driving to the pitch (field), warming up with those you have gone to battle with too many times to remember, those few quiet moments to yourself before kick-off, the ball in the air? Those are the reasons I keep playing this amazing game. The lessons learned and the bonds formed with those you play with are things you will carry for the rest of your days. If any of the above sounds interesting or familiar, you need look no further than the game of rugby and the Middlesex Barbarians. Eric R. Benson, Captain |
